Have you ever hear this one?
“Poor people have big TVs and rich people have big libraries.” - unknown
I love that quote. Well, let me rephrase that. I only kinda like that quote because I have a pretty big TV myself ;-), but I ALSO have a huge library.
Here’s a story…
So, I was at TKD (Tae Kwon Do) class last Thursday getting my butt kicked as usual. At the end of class, one of the assistant instructors approached me in the locker room. Now, this guy is pretty young. Heck, I think he’s only 25 or 26. Nonetheless, he is a 2nd degree black belt so I normally address him as “sir”.
He walks up to me and says, “Hi Tim, I’ve been made aware of your business dealings.” Now my mind is kind of racing and I’m thinking, “Hmmm… what can he be talking about… my business dealings?”
Well, he continues with, “Could you please recommend the most valuable book you’ve ever read about starting and running a business?”
“Oh… sure,” I replied. “Uhmmm… can I think about this a bit and get back to you, sir?”
“Yes Tim, that would be fine.”
I spent the next few days pondering this excellent question. I thought about how much I’d learned from the hundreds of books that I’ve read over the last 5 years. This was NOT going to be easy.
So, I finally came up with a list of the top SIX books that have influenced my businesses.
Here they are…

- Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
- Think and Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill
- The Greatest Salesman in the World - Og Mandino
- How to Make Millions with your Ideas - Dan Kennedy
- The Magic of Thinking Big - David J. Schwartz
- Magic Words That Bring You Riches - Ted Nicholas
If you haven’t read these books, I challenge you to buy them TODAY. And if you’ve only read them once or twice, I challenge you to read them AGAIN.
I can still remember the saying my Dad used to tell me when I was growing up.
He’d say, “Tim, the person you’ll be 5 years from now will be determined by the books you read and the people you hang out with.”
Yep… as usual, Dad was right again.
To your success,

Tim Schmidt
